About
Yun Jung Kim is an NIHR Doctoral Fellow and Consultant Pharmacist specialising in hepatology. Her research focuses on improving risk prediction and the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with chronic liver disease, particularly chronic viral hepatitis. She applies advanced analytical methods, including statistical modelling and machine learning, to develop and validate prediction models using large-scale real-world datasets. With a clinical foundation in pharmacy, her work prioritises models that are both clinically relevant and readily implementable in routine practice.
Her doctoral research is supported by an interdisciplinary supervisory team spanning clinical medicine and data science, including Prof Salim Khakoo, Dr Ryan Buchanan, and Dr Tina Wang across the University of Southampton and the University of Oxford, with additional practice supervision from Mr Philip Newland-Jones at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and mentorship from Prof Ellie Barnes at the University of Oxford.
Her PhD builds on a pre-doctoral fellowship supported by the NIHR HIC Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease Theme and continues within a broad national and international collaborative network. The programme actively involves patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) contributors to ensure patient-centred relevance, with the overarching aim of translating data-driven approaches into practical tools that improve patient care.
Yun also serves as Acting Chair of the British Hepatology Pharmacy Group, affiliated with the British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL), while continuing her three-year term as Vice Chair. She joined the Pharmacy Task Force of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in June 2026 for a three-year term.

Yun's research interests include hepatology, chronic viral hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, clinical risk prediction, statistical modelling, machine learning, real-world clinical data, clinical decision support, and the translation of data-driven research into routine clinical practice.
